What is IRION

IRION is a European research and innovation project supporting a more sustainable and resilient green hydrogen value chain. As hydrogen technologies expand across Europe, the increasing dependence on critical raw materials (CRM) poses environmental, economic and supply challenges. IRION addresses this challenge by promoting a circular approach, enabling valuable materials to be recovered, reused and reintegrated into new technologies.

The project focuses on improving the sustainability of proton exchange membrane water electrolysers (PEMWE), a key technology for producing green hydrogen. By developing innovative and environmentally friendly solutions, IRION aims to reduce waste, lower material dependency and contribute to Europe’s long-term climate and industrial goals.

IRION brings together a strong and complementary consortium of research organisations, industry partners and innovation experts from across Europe, combining diverse expertise and scientific knowledge with practical experience to deliver solutions that are both scientifically sound and relevant for real-world applications.
Co-funded by the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking under the Horizon Europe programme, IRION contributes to key European policy priorities, including the European Green Deal and the Critical Raw Materials Act and supports Europe’s transition towards clean, secure and sustainable hydrogen technologies by strengthening circularity and collaboration across the value chain.
