Our impact

IRION creates a significant environmental, economic, and strategic impact by fostering a circular and resilient value chain for proton exchange membrane water electrolysers (PEMWEs), a vital technology for Europe’s green hydrogen transition.

Environmental Impact

IRION reduces environmental pressures in PEM water electrolysers by developing low-impact recycling routes for critical materials such as iridium and fluorinated ionomers. By replacing energy-intensive and hazardous recovery methods, the project limits emissions, energy use, and material losses.

Economic & Industrial Impact

By enabling the recovery and reuse of scarce materials, IRION contributes to circular manufacturing approaches with potential for scale-up. This improves material efficiency in PEM electrolysers and strengthens the resilience of the European hydrogen value chain.

Strategic & Policy Impact

IRION contributes to Europe’s strategic autonomy by reducing dependence on imported critical raw materials, in line with the EU Critical Raw Materials Act. The project aligns with the objectives of the European Green Deal, promoting decarbonisation and circular economy principles.

Societal Impact

Through safer and more responsible recycling and manufacturing practices, IRION contributes to the protection of human health and the environment. The project also contributes to the energy transition and to skills development in circular and green industrial sectors.
