On 16 July 2026, IRION participated in the PROMISERS Open Exploitation & Innovation Workshop on PFAS-free Technologies for Clean Hydrogen. The event brought together researchers, industry representatives and EU-funded projects to present the latest developments in PFAS-related materials and technologies for hydrogen applications.
During the workshop, IRION team member, Lorenza Catini (RINA C) presented IRION’s work on the circular recovery of iridium and PFSA ionomers from end-of-life Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysers (PEMWEs).
The presentation introduced the project’s objectives and highlighted IRION’s approach to recovering and reusing valuable materials from end-of-life catalyst-coated membranes, supporting more circular PEM water electrolyser technologies.
The presentation showcased several aspects of IRION’s research, including:
- characterising degraded PFSA ionomers from end-of-life catalyst-coated membranes (CCMs)
- investigating recovery technologies based on Accelerated Soxhlet Extraction, Ionic Liquids and Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES)
- validating the reuse of recovered materials in new PEM water electrolyser components.
The workshop featured presentations from research organisations, industry and Horizon Europe projects working on PFAS-related technologies, providing an excellent opportunity to showcase IRION’s progress alongside other innovative initiatives in the European hydrogen ecosystem.
